GP TRAVELLER GUIDES
Description
I’ll help you choose the best place to stay during your trip to the US Grand Prix™.
I heartily recommend staying in downtown Austin during your Grand Prix trip, for three big reasons. Firstly, it’s only 30-40 minutes from the circuit, making transfers easy. Secondly, you’ll find plenty of exciting things within walking distance when you’re not at the Grand Prix. And thirdly, there’s a fine choice of brand and independent hotels.
Austin is growing as a tourist destination, thanks to big events like Formula One and the South by Southwest music festival. More and more new hotels are opening as a result.
My first pick would be The Driskill, a grand old hotel on the corner of 6th Street. Occupying a whole downtown block, and with a beautiful period lobby, The Driskill is a great way to experience old Texas while being right on the city’s liveliest street.
For modern, mainstream luxury, try the brand new 37-storey Fairmont Austin. It’s in a great location, among the greenery of Palm Creek and with views of Lady Bird Lake. There’s also a spa, a fine dining restaurant, and business facilities for those who need to get a bit of work in while away.
Prefer a boutique hotel? The Hotel San Jose places you next to the trendy shops and cafes of South Congress Avenue, with bungalow-stylerooms divided by garden pathways. South Congress Hotel is in a similar location and has a rooftop pool, perfect for a city with an average of 300 sunny days per year. And Hotel Ella, built in 1898, is close to the museums of the University of Texas and is full of Southern charm.
