The Bahrain Grand Prix takes place at Bahrain International Circuit, in the Sakhir desert, around 30 km southwest of Manama, the capital of Bahrain.
Bahrain International Circuit opened in 2004 and was the first Formula 1 venue in the Middle East. The track is built on open desert land rather than within the city. It has 15 corners and four long straights, a layout that produces multiple overtaking zones through the lap, particularly into the heavy braking points.
Pierre Gasly has called it “a great track for racing. There are multiple places for overtaking, so it’s usually an exciting one for us drivers.”
Since 2014, the Bahrain Grand Prix has been held at night under floodlights. The race begins around sunset and finishes in full darkness, with the cars running against the desert backdrop.
The race usually takes place early in the Formula 1 season, typically in March. For many fans, it’s one of the first opportunities of the year to see the new cars racing.
The Formula 1 sessions run alongside support races such as Formula 2, Formula 3, and the Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East. The full schedule is published on F1.com about four weeks before the race.
How many days should you spend at the Bahrain Grand Prix?
Plan for three full days, Friday to Sunday, to see every Formula 1 session and the support races.
Bahrain Grand Prix weekend schedule at a glance
A typical Formula 1 weekend runs Friday to Sunday. Friday is practice. Saturday is final practice and qualifying. Sunday is the Grand Prix.
Each year, a handful of Grand Prix follow a sprint format. On a sprint weekend, Friday includes practice and sprint qualifying. Saturday includes the sprint race and Grand Prix qualifying. Sunday is still the Grand Prix. Sprint weekends rotate around the calendar each season, so check the current year’s schedule on F1.com.
