Plan your Portuguese Grand Prix trip

The circuit is also known as the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, or simply Portimão. It lies in the hills of the western Algarve in southern Portugal. What sets Portimão apart is the ground it’s built on. The track rises and falls steeply throughout, with blind crests and corners where you can’t see the apex until you’re on it.

Where is the Portuguese Grand Prix held?

The Portuguese Grand Prix takes place at the Algarve International Circuit, known as Portimão, in the hills of the western Algarve in southern Portugal. The circuit lies a short drive inland from the coastal towns of Portimão and Lagos, and around 150 km from Lisbon.

Why go to the Portuguese Grand Prix?

The Algarve International Circuit is one of the most distinctive circuits on the Formula 1 calendar, a rollercoaster of steep climbs, blind crests, and a plunging drop to the final corner, set in the hills above the Algarve coast. It lies in one of Europe's most popular holiday regions, close to the beaches and resort towns of the western Algarve, which makes it easy to build a longer trip around the race weekend.

What to expect over three days

Plan for three full days, Friday to Sunday, to see every Formula 1 session and the support races. Friday is practice. Saturday is final practice and qualifying. Sunday is the Grand Prix.

What makes the Portuguese Grand Prix special?

The circuit and its setting. Portimão is built on steep, rolling ground, with sharp elevation changes, blind crests, and corners the drivers commit to before they can see them, which makes it one of the more physical circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. It lies in the western Algarve, one of Europe's most popular stretches of coast, so the race pairs easily with beaches, coastal towns, and onward trips to Lisbon or across the border into southern Spain.
