Estimated Reading Time: 4-5 minutes
Silverstone is one of the more logistically challenging Grand Prix on the calendar. The circuit sits in the Northamptonshire countryside, away from any major city or airport, and race-weekend traffic on the surrounding roads is famously slow. There isn’t a single “easy” route, and most fans build their trip around either driving or a train-and-road combination.
Getting to Silverstone by air
International fans typically fly into London, which has five major airports. London Heathrow (LHR) is the largest and closest to Silverstone, around 90 minutes by road in normal traffic. London Luton (LTN) is also workable. London Gatwick (LGW), London Stansted (STN), and London City (LCY) all add more road time to the journey.
Birmingham Airport (BHX) is the closer alternative if you can find a suitable flight. The journey from Birmingham to Silverstone takes around 45 minutes by road in normal traffic, less than half the time from Heathrow.
Direct flights to London are available from across the world. Direct flights to Birmingham are more limited and tend to serve European routes.
Getting from the airport to Silverstone
The simplest combinations are:
Heathrow to Silverstone by road. Around 90 minutes in normal traffic, longer at peak times or on race weekend.
London to Silverstone by train and road. Trains from London Euston to Milton Keynes Central run frequently, taking around 35 minutes. From Milton Keynes, taxis and pre-booked transfers cover the remaining 30 km to the circuit.
Birmingham to Silverstone by road. Around 45 minutes in normal traffic.
Race-weekend transport from London or Milton Keynes is also covered by official park-and-ride and shuttle services. These are detailed in the Getting Around guide.
Visa and entry requirements for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone
Many visitors don’t need a visa to enter the UK for short stays, but requirements depend on your nationality. Some nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), applied for online before travel. Check the official guidance at gov.uk before booking.

Money-saving tip
Look at Birmingham Airport before defaulting to Heathrow
Most international fans default to flying into Heathrow because of the wider range of flights, but Birmingham Airport (BHX) is significantly closer to Silverstone — around 45 minutes by road, less than half the time from Heathrow. If your route home doesn’t require a Heathrow connection, Birmingham can save you time, transfer costs, and a longer drive.
FAQ's
Most international fans fly into London Heathrow Airport (LHR). Birmingham Airport (BHX) is closer to Silverstone, but Heathrow has more long-haul and international routes.
Yes. London Heathrow is the UK’s biggest airport and serves hundreds of destinations worldwide.
Travel by road from London or Heathrow, or take the train from London Euston to Milton Keynes Central, then continue by taxi, transfer or race-weekend transport. Silverstone also operates official park-and-ride services during the British Grand Prix.
Arrive one or two days before the race weekend. This gives you time to settle in and avoids arriving during the busiest race-weekend traffic.
