The British Grand Prix takes place at Silverstone, in Northamptonshire, central England. The circuit is around 100 km northwest of London and around 65 km southeast of Birmingham.
Silverstone is a permanent racing venue and the spiritual home of Formula 1. It hosted the very first race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1950 and has been a fixture on the calendar ever since.
The lap is fast and flowing, with a sequence of high-speed corners that drivers consistently rate among the best on the calendar. The Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel complex, a fast left-right-left sequence taken at very high speed, is one of the most demanding sections in Formula 1. Pierre Gasly has called Silverstone “fast, high-speed, a place where the car is at its limit.” Copse, the high-speed right-hand corner at the end of the start-finish straight, is another defining feature of the lap.
The British Grand Prix is the home race for seven of the ten current Formula 1 teams, with McLaren, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Alpine, and Williams all based within driving distance of the circuit. The atmosphere reflects this. Alex Albon has called Silverstone “one of the best tracks of the year. Silverstone is always a special race to go to.”
The race usually takes place in early July, with long English summer evenings stretching well past the on-track action. Weather is unpredictable: sun, rain, and changeable conditions across the weekend are all common.
The Formula 1 sessions run alongside support races such as Formula 2, Formula 3, and Porsche Supercup. The full schedule is published on F1.com about four weeks before the race.
How many days do you need for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone?
Plan for three full days, Friday to Sunday, to see every Formula 1 session and the support races. Between F1 sessions, you’ll also get to enjoy a full schedule of Formula 2, Formula 3, and Porsche Supercup.
British Grand Prix weekend schedule: what happens each day?
Formula 1 runs two practice sessions on Friday. The support series, Formula 2, Formula 3, and the Porsche Supercup, hold their qualifying sessions.
Saturday is the busiest day on track. It begins with the Formula 3 Sprint Race, then moves through Porsche Supercup qualifying, the third Formula 1 practice session, further support race sessions, and closes with Formula 1 qualifying.
The support series run their feature races on Sunday. The drivers’ parade takes place before the main event. The British Grand Prix closes out the weekend.
Each year, a handful of Grand Prix follow a sprint format. On a sprint weekend, Friday includes practice and sprint qualifying. Saturday includes the sprint race and Grand Prix qualifying. Sunday is still the Grand Prix. Sprint weekends rotate around the calendar each season, so check the current year’s schedule on F1.com.
